Geometry Dash Lite 2.2.11

Groundhog Day for Polygonal Masochists

Geometry Dash is a game where you get to thank providence for unlimited lives. It consists of several excruciatingly difficult levels that require perfect information about what lies ahead and a perfectly executed choreography in order to complete them. Geometry Dash Lite is nothing less than highly challenging.

Geometry Dash Lite

Upon my first foray into the first level, I was intrigued by the trial & error type approach that the game seems to be based upon. I remembered reading about checkpoints while I summarily skimmed over the How to Play section. However my jumping square was getting stabbed numerous times before anything of the sort came into view. Suddenly though, I managed to traverse one of these spiky areas when my square entered a portal and continued on as a spaceship. Needless to say that I felt an immense sense of relief. The ship was relatively easy to control, and the way was clear. This was a well deserved break after the arduous hurdle that went on prior. Suddenly the route narrowed. I steeled myself and managed to bring my trajectory towards the middle of the screen. I then reached another portal out of which the old familiar cube emerged back and subsequently hit another spike. "Great!" I thought while I stretched my fingers in anticipation of a "Continue". However, the entire thing went back to square one (pun intended). "What happened to the checkpoints?!" I exclaimed, foolishly thinking that the portals were somehow saving my progress...

Geometry Dash Lite

Well, buddy, the trick in Geometry Dash is to complete a level from start to finish without any mistakes. Similar to a live music show, each level features an audio track which is cleverly mimicked by the level design and gameplay. In order to 'train' you do get a to play in Practice Mode, which IS available from the pause menu (thankfully). In this mode checkpoints are constantly generated behind you. Whenever you fail, you will re-spawn close to the action. This is solely for you to to learn the layout of the level and practice getting by the areas which you find the most difficult.

As you get better and complete levels (also grabbing those difficult to get stars), there will be new colors and models for customizing your little square protagonist's looks. This is, of course, just for cosmetic purposes. You will still need to become good at Geometry Dash if you want to get far through the levels. The good part is that all of the levels are available from the start. So if you're getting impatient or frustrated, you can go ahead and explore some of the more advanced ones. Maybe that will convince you to go back and work on your current challenge, you would-be-cheater...

Final Thoughts

As much as I suck at Geometry Dash Lite, I really like it a lot. There are no compromises with this little game. You either take it full on or you don't. There is no reward in a casual attitude, and there are no purchasable saving graces either. It's a real throwback to the nineteen eighties gameplay philosophy, and it's a blast!
